Dogs are a den animal. They have, in the wild, a home. This home is kept clean. As soon as the young puppy is able to learn, his mother teaches him to “void” outside the den.

We can imitate nature by providing our dog with his own den. In many cases, a wire crate. Why should your puppy’s crate be wire? Three reasons:

• First, your pup can see you, and vice-versa. This is comforting for both partners.
• Second, there is unlimited air circulation.
• Third, the crate can be easily taken down and stored using very little room.

Pick a crate size that will accomodate your pet when he is full grown. This will save you money in the long run. When your puppy is small, section off an area that will be adequate for his current needs. Remember, the idea is for the puppy to keep his den clean. By keeping his room small, he will be unable to find a corner in which to void.

Your puppy starts his or her life ready to learn. It is up to you with consistency, repetition, praise, patience, and kindness to help to develop your pet into a dog you can be proud of.  A simple rule that must be followed is when the puppy is left unattended, he must be restricted to his crate.

Common sense tells you to take the puppy outside after he eats or drinks. Remember, after he finishes his “job” outside, reap praise on him, as he wants to please you.

Restrict the puppy to his cage at bedtime or when you are away from home for several hours. As long as he is old enough and has control, he will hold “it” until given the opportunity to go outside. Remember, be fair, he is only a baby.

Furnish the crate simply. Use a rug, dog crate mat or towel to provide him with a comfortable area. Make sure the entire floor area is covered,. This will convey the idea that no area should be used as a washroom.

The crate is his home. His favorite dog toys should always be returned to the crate when play time is over. The crate will serve as his home for his entire lifetime. Make sure he feels secure and comfortable, but don’t give in when he starts whining to get out.
