As we enter the holiday season, many pet owners need to board their dogs or cats when they travel. With proper training at an early age, pets will get used to being transported in kennels, and will even learn to love their new home. If hiring a pet sitter to come to the house, a crate is an ideal place to keep your pet for short intervals while they are home alone.

Any dog or cat who gets used to it's own crate will truly feel safe and enjoy having a space of their own. This is especially true if your hosting holiday festivities at your home. Holiday parties can become too loud or distracting (for pets too!). When home crating, a Petmate Kennel can be moved into any room to help keep pets calm in all atmospheres. Crating a pet can come in handy, especially if a pet is not used to children. If there are little ones roaming through the home, a pet can be safe in it's crate from grabbing, poking or prodding.

Here are a few simple guidelines to follow if crate training is something of interest to you:

Do not leave pets in a crate for extended amounts of time, every day. A 3-4 hour time frame is suggested as a sufficient amount of time for pets to be in its crate. If working long hours, or going out of town, it is advisable to ask someone to let your dog or cat out for a time before putting back into the crate.
When crate training a puppy, use the crate as a treat, not as a threat. Dogs can sense if something is being used as a consequence. Use the same phrase such as "cage time", "crate time", "bed time" or any other short command that a pet can connect with the command to go in the crate.
Early on, a treat can be used after the dog enters it's crate. Make sure that the treat is safe for your dog, and is eaten prior to you leaving. Never leave a treat in the crate that can splinter, crack or break into small pieces after you leave.
Dogs love to keep a favorite or a few favorite toys in their crate. Especially dogs that need to chew, such as Sammy the Samoyed. Dogs who chew do much better in an all enclosed pet porter, as opposed to a wire cage because they cannot chew through the porter material. With a wire cage, a dog who chews can chew through the wire squares and ruin a carpet or flooring that is underneath.
Make sure that the dog has plenty of room and can sit, stand, and turn fully around in a circle in the crate. It is better to have a little larger crate than a small one. This is especially true if your pet likes a dog bed, lot of toys or a blanket in the crate.

During the spring and summer, the diet of many songbirds and other birds is mainly of insects and spiders. These tiny creepy, crawly creatures are highly nutritious, abundant, and, for the most part, easily captured by the birds.

During fall and winter, however, nonmigratory birds must shift their diets to fruits and seeds to survive. This is the time of year when a winter bird-feeding enthusiast should roll get ready to lend a hand The question is, what to serve the little feathery visitors?

Wild Bird Stores (online and offline) are stocked; with bags, buckets, and cakes of many bird food types. It can be a bit confusing. One way to attracting a diversity of bird species is to provide a variety of food types, but that doesn’t mean you need to purchase one of everything in the store.

Different birds prefer different types of seeds, but the seeds that attract the greatest number of species are black-oil sunflower. These seeds have a high meat-to-shell ratio, they are nutritious and high in fat, and their small size and thin shells make them easy for small birds to handle and crack. (Striped sunflower seeds are larger and have a thicker seed coat.)

Black Oil sunflower seeds are a high-energy food and is a favorite of the majority of birds that visit feeders. Dried, whole-kernel corn, a favorite food for jays, pigeons and doves, quail, and pheasants is probably the least expensive of all bird seeds.

Cracked corn, however, is easier to eat for blackbirds, finches, and sparrows.

“Millet” comes in red and white varieties, but most birds prefer white proso millet over red. “Nyjer,” or thistle seed, is a delicacy for small finches such as goldfinches, siskins, and redpolls.

Because nyjer seeds are small and expensive, it’s best to offer them in a special nyjer feeder, whichhas tiny ports that prevent the seeds from spilling out. Safflower is another seed that many birds like – most notably, cardinals.

Chillin' with Chinchillas

Ever since I was a little kid, I have been mesmerized by any animal that is big, soft and fuzzy. Recently, I was formally introduced to the Chinchilla at my local library. The library had an 'exotic animal" handler and he brought in several exotic animals for the kids to see and touch.

Now, I am not a "rodent" person by any means, which made me a bit skeptical as the animal handler explained that the Chinchilla is a "rodent". But, when this little guy was passed around to be touched, I was immediately hooked. This so-called "rodent" was by far the softest, fuzziest animal I have ever touched. I had to have one--immediately.

In fact, I fell so in love with that little guy that I almost stuffed him in my pocket and took him home. But there was a rather large crowd and everyone was watching. I reluctantly passed him back to the handler and began obsessing about where to get my next pet.

Although I am an impulsive, obsessive pet person, I have learned over the years to do considerable research on animals before purchasing one. Especially when the animal is an"exotic" . I decided to go on a Chinchilla fact finding mission to see if this animal would be a good fit for our family. Here are a few interesting things that I've learned along the way, along with my thoughts (in red italics):

Chinchilla fur is about 30 times softer than human hair, and is considered to be the softest fur in the world. ("knew it.....have to have it"--bonus)
Chinchilla's have the highest fur density of any land animal- their coats are so thick that even fleas can't live on them. ("no fleas, - excellent. another bonus".)
The name Chinchilla comes from a South American Indian tribe and means Little Chinta. ("I love Native American history- the name is cute- even if it is a little creature" hmmm.. let's try to find a bigger one..)

Chinchillas bathe in dust. Water can't touch their fur. They roll around in a dust bath to keep themselves clean and furry. ("dust bath- awesome- don't even have to get them wet. What happens if it gets out and goes into the bathtub? hmmm....not a bonus)
Chinchillas weigh between one and two pounds ("my dog could eat it for breakfast. Harry weighs in at 75 and is very jealous....not good")
Chinchillas are nocturnal and they can live to be 10-20 years old. ("Can I realistically handle 10-20 years of staying up all night, entertaining an animal? no....not a bonus.")
Chinchillas are considered rodents ("call it what you want, a rat is a rat......not a bonus")

After researching the facts on buying a Chinchilla, I looked around at all the amazing pet products that are available specifically for this engaging little creature. The Chinchilla chiller rodent pad was one of my favorites. I read that the Chinchilla prefers temps under 75 degrees, so this Chiller would be the perfect accessory for a furry friend.

Some other appealing products like the Chinchilla Dry Dust Bath, the Honey Treat Stick and the Bath House were all perfect for this little pet. I was amazed at how much stuff a Chinchilla could want or need.

After careful consideration of what it realistically would take to keep a happy, healthy Chinchilla in my house, I decided that it wasn't a good option right now. Actually, my husband said you want a "what?"- I think he thought I said a kangaroo or a Koala Bear. Needless to say, I will not be chillin' with any Chinchillas at home anytime soon. I'll just keep on attending exotic animal shows to get my quick furry fix and be on my way.

Steps in Choosing Reptile Cage Substrate and Litter

The type of reptile litter, or substrate, you buy is going to be determined by the type of reptile that you have. There are many different types of litter for a reptile's tank, terrarium or cage. Some options include wood/bark chips, sand, soil, moss, carpet and pebbles.

Some reptile species do better with one kind of substrate than another. Some types of litter can even be harmful to a reptile or cause sickness or death. If a substrate consists of tiny pieces, it has to be digestible. It is very important to a reptile's health that it is provided the right litter.

When shopping for reptile litter, do your research done. If you have an iguana or other arboreal lizard, the substrate isn't that important because most of the time your lizard will be climbing in the cage.

Think carefully about the type of litter for reptiles that spend most of their time around the bottom of the tank. Reptilite bedding is a great option because it has big pieces that don't get eaten and is very absorbent. This low impact substrate also contains strontium and magnesium; while being free of silica and phosphates.

Bark chips are another reliable option, as the larger pieces are rarely eaten. Smaller reptiles might find this litter hard to walk on, however.

Sand like Vita-Sand by Zoo Med can be a good substrate for certain reptiles including hermit crabs and lizards because it is relatively easy to scoop out waste. There is one caveat; you have to make sure your lizard isn't eating the sand.

What's in my Water?!

Do you know exactly what you are checking your aquarium water for? Owners of freshwater tanks you should be looking for pH, Nitrate, Nitrite, Hardness, and Alkalinity. These substances can be lethal if they are at unsafe concentration levels. Test the water every week, or when you notice changes in your fish. Some tests measure all five substances, and some water tests measure each substance individually. Quick Dip Aquarium Multi-Test Kit, pictured to the left, uses strips to measure various chemical levels at the same time. Testing the water is essential, but unless you understand the root of the problem, you will have a hard time establishing a stable biological system in your water.

Ammonia is highly poisonous, but only is present at pH levels below 7. Ammonia levels can not exceed 0.05 mg/l. Nitrite is also poisonous and should not be at all perceptible in aquarium water. Phosphate creates algae problems at levels above 0.05 mg/l. Nitrate levels between 50 mg and 100 mg are acceptable for fish.

If any of these value exceed safe levels, a eighty percent partial water change must be performed. Add fluids containing zeolite, or better yet, insert a cartridge into your filter that forces the water to run through zeolite.

Water hardness and pH are dependant on one another. If one level is off, the other will probably be off too. Most fish thrive in pH levels of about 6.5, but this varies for different types of fish. As does water hardness for fish. The tropical river-dwelling fish flourish in soft water of about 4 dGH. Know the levels that your tank needs and balance the levels using rainwater, and reverse osmosis. If the pH must be lowered, insert fertilizer-free white peat granules into the water.

It seems that an advanced knowledge in chemistry would be beneficial for maintaining the perfect aquarium! But, simple water test and an efficient filter usually can do the trick.

Potty Train Your Puppy!

Housebreaking your puppy may be an irritating process at first, but a few tips and tricks will make the procedure faster and less frustrating.

Understand that a very young puppy has not developed bladder control and there WILL BE accidents. Having patience is essential, because in the first few weeks, effort is futile. If you plan to leave the house, expect a mess. Keep the puppy confined to a room covered with newspaper and/or absorbent puppy pads. Your puppy should relieve himself every few hours. The only sign before relieving himself will be sniffing the ground. Immediately place your dog in the designated area and let him urinate. Then, praise the dog for using the area. Never punish him or put his nose in the mess if he has soiled the floor or carpet. A disgusting mess is definitely trying, however disciplinary action is counterproductive and will undoubtedly scare the puppy.

Once the puppy reaches eight weeks old, you can then begin to train him outside. Frequently let him out, especially first thing in the morning and after meals. Choose a consistent spot, as previous odors will stimulate the puppy to urinate or defecate. Carry a pooper scooper with you because no one wants to step in your dog's mess and in many places cleaning up is the law.

To clean up indoor messes use an odor-eliminating disinfectant. Do not use common household cleaners that contain ammonia because these may remind the puppy of its own urine smell.

The common phrase 'you are what you eat' also applies to your pets. A healthy diet increases the longevity and well-being of your cat. This means that doing your research concerning the bodily needs of your feline will increase his stamina, strength, and general happiness.

Obviously most pet owners are not educated in the biological make-up of their animals. You should, however, understand the basic nutritional requirements of your cat.

Cats are carnivores, therefore their meals should consist mainly of meat.
Read labels- make sure that their food includes taurine, arginine, vitamin A, arachidonic acid and niacin.
Regardless of age, all cats need at least twenty-six percent of the diet to be composed of protein and ten percent to be of fat.
Cats should be fed a number of small meals every day- at least three.
